French Empire Period Iron Strongbox , cassaforte A remarkable French iron strongbox dating from the Empire period (1799-1815), combining imposing construction with refined decorative details. The chest is secured at the front with two padlocks , while a concealed keyhole is discreetly hidden on the top , beneath the Sphinx figure, adding an ingenious element of security. A hidden draw beneath ,opens with a secret push. The front is further embellished with two small crowned ornaments, lending the otherwise austere ironwork a distinctive aristocratic character. The interior reveals the exceptional craftsmanship of its period locking mechanism, with an elaborate arrangement of iron plates, levers, bolts, and springs. Game box with chess and backgammon Eger, 17th century 48 x 48 x 11.5 cm Provenance: Lothar Schmid (1928-2013), German chess Grandmaster Literature: publications World of Art: Art chamber games by the Kunsthistoriches Museum in Vienna  Double-sided game box : one side shows a bas-relief depicting the meeting of Aeneas and Dido, accompanied by a Putto. The other side features a chessboard in finely executed marquetry. The interior reveals an elegant backgammon board decorated with double-tailed dolphins. Eger, a Bohemian Free City (now Cheb, Czech Republic), was well known in the 17th century for a specialised type of woodworking, particularly for intarsia panels. This set belonged to Lothar Schmid, the German chess Grandmaster and collector of chess books, boards and pieces. Description / Expertise Fine Alabaster Canopic Jar, 26 Dynasty Canopic jars were used by the Ancient Egyptians during the mummification process to store and preserve the viscera of their owner for the afterlife. They were commonly either carved from limestone or were made of pottery.These jars were used by Ancient Egyptians from the time of the Old Kingdom up until the time of the Late Period or the Ptolemaic Period, by which time the viscera were simply wrapped and placed with the body.The viscera were not kept in a single canopic jar: each jar was reserved for specific organs. The name "canopic" reflects the mistaken association by early Egyptologists with the Greek legend of Canopus.
